Welcome to my Gouache Course, designed for both absolute beginner and intermediate artists who are ready to dive into the world of gouache painting. Whether you're new to gouache or looking to refine your skills, this course will give you the tools, techniques, and confidence to make beautiful art inspired by nature.

Over 8 weeks, you will be guided through key gouache techniques to help you create your best work. Plus, you’ll receive weekly group feedback sessions through Zoom, where you can ask questions, get personalized feedback, and connect with fellow students in a Skool group community. We'll paint the exact motifs you see here, including my favorite piece, "Monet's Flowers," which reignited my creativity and has already been exhibited twice.

I’m a professional artist with over a decade of experience, creating work for clients like Adobe, HarperCollins, Orbit Books, and Wizards of the Coast. As a Chesley Award winner, I bring years of artistic expertise and a deep love for painting—so you’ll be in the best hands on your gouache journey!

Course Breakdown

Week 1: Fundamentals & Mindset

Unlock the magic of gouache and build a strong foundation for your painting journey! Master the art of painting opaquely, achieving that rich, velvety finish that makes gouache so unique. You’ll learn to mix the perfect consistency of paint, get familiar with your materials and colors through color swatches and bring a beautiful vase of flowers to life using the wet-on-dry technique. But painting is more than just technique - it’s also about mindset. Together, we’ll explore how to build confidence and truly enjoy the creative process.

Week 2: Transparency & Layering

Understand the art of layering gouache in different ways that will give you full creative freedom and make your colors shine. You’ll learn to layer transparently and opaquely, along with how to reactivate dried paint in a controlled way that works for you - not against you. To put all into practice, we’ll create a vibrant flower painting that blends these techniques seamlessly, giving you a solid foundation to use in all your future artwork.

Week 3: Texture

Dive into the world of texture and discover how it can bring depth and character to your paintings! In this lesson, we’ll explore how layering transparent glazes can create the soft, organic look of moss-covered stone while experimenting further with the balance between opaqueness and transparency. You'll learn how to build up texture gradually, control the luminosity of your colors, and make your painting feel rich and dimensional. By the end, you'll have a deeper understanding of how to use texture intentionally to enhance your artwork.

Week 4: Gradients

Learn how to achieve smooth transitions of color to create beautiful sky gradients and atmospheric landscapes with a polished, professional look. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to blend colors effectively, dipping your toes into wet-on-wet techniques. We’ll paint a lighthouse at sunset, layering warm pinks, oranges and cool blues to capture the magic of the golden hour.

Week 5: Wet on Wet

Fully dive into the versatile wet-on-wet technique to create soft edges and beautiful blends in your paintings. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to paint delicate, fluffy clouds by gently pushing and guiding the paint across the paper. Master the perfect timing during the activated stage of this technique - when the paint is just wet enough to move but not so wet that it loses control. To put your newfound skills to work, we’ll paint a peaceful, Ghibli-inspired summer field beneath a vast blue sky filled with soft clouds.

Week 6: Values & Simplification

Master the essential concept of a clear value structure and value grouping, learning how to simplify complex subjects into cohesive, compelling compositions. In this lesson, we’ll explore how to break down intricate scenes, focusing on the relationship between light and dark to guide the viewer’s eye. We’ll paint the soft, rolling hills of the English countryside, complete with a serene meadow and grazing sheep, all while delving into the technique of atmospheric perspective. You’ll also learn how to simplify foliage, creating natural, effortless-looking greenery that adds depth and interest to your work.

Week 7: Color Theory

Explore the rich and dynamic world of color, learning how to mix with confidence and precision. By mastering the core properties of color - hue, value, and saturation - you’ll have the ability to mix any shade you desire. You’ll also learn how color is inherently relative, with its perception shifting depending on its surroundings and context. Additionally, we’ll dive into the concept of warm and cool colors, exploring how different hues can evoke a range of emotions and set the tone in your artwork.

Week 8: Paint What You Love

Put everything you've learned into practice by painting subjects that truly inspire you, focusing on creating personal and meaningful artwork. Learn how to capture your own reference photos, discover what sparks your creativity, and begin cultivating a lifelong artistic journey. We'll paint "Monet's Flowers", a piece that reignited my artistic passion and has been exhibited twice! By the end of this lesson, you'll be ready to embark on your own artistic path, and you'll have an extra two week of feedback to showcase the artwork you want to create independently.
